Andrea Shipton, of Mountain Top, a student at Hamilton College, traveled to Nepal to trek the country’s Annapurna region over spring break.
Shipton, a senior majoring in environmental studies, is a graduate of Crestwood High School.
The trip was part of the Himalayan Mountaineering class in which Shipton is enrolled.
Taught by Professor of History Maurice Isserman, the course examines Himalayan mountaineering over the past 150 years, and its roots in imperial expansion, national competition, and cultural and social evolution.
This experiential learning trip to Nepal enabled students to establish a connection between what they are studying in the classroom and what they personally experienced of the culture and people for two weeks.
The students visited Nepali villages including Ghandruk, Chhomrong, Tadapani, and Poonhill. Along the way, they took in the beauty of the region’s bamboo and rhododendron forests, rivers, waterfalls, stone staircases, and 360-degree views of the mountains.
The trip was supervised by Director of Outdoor Leadership Andrew Jillings.
