MOUNTAIN TOP — With summertime on the horizon, staying cool is a must. Luckily, Susan Thomas and Crestwood music teacher Jay Thomas started LoneStar Sno, a traveling food truck selling shaved ice and snow cone treats with over 30 flavors.
When asked about what inspired the two to start their business, Susan Thomas said, “This was my dream. Growing up in Texas, snow cones and shaved ice were a summer tradition. I’ve always seen ice cream, water ice, or Italian ice around, but not snow cones. We were at Fourth of July last year at Wright Township Park, and I was in the parking lot of the school, and I thought, ‘I think snow cones would do really well around here,’ and we talked about it, and when [Jay] came around to the idea, then we did what we needed to do to make it happen.”
The two thought the idea would be fun: to get out, see families, meet new people and have them discover the true Texas Southern version of snow cones. According to Jay Thomas, the most rewarding part of the business is “seeing people from the community, the conversations, and the laughs.”
Upcoming events where you can enjoy the treats for yourself include:
• May 30, they will be in Naticoke at a food truck event held by Picosita Tacos in Square Patriot Park,
• July 3rd in Shickshinny at North Canal St. Park for a Hot Dog event,
• and a full-circle moment on July 4 in Wright Township Park, the place where Susan first had her idea for the business.
• Along with different dates and locations being added constantly.
A few future goals for the business duo would be “to expand the business, to become a family legacy for future generations to carry on and create something bigger than they ever dreamed of.”
