The Mountain Top Historical Society held its inaugural quilt show on Saturday, June 8, at Mountain Top Presbyterian Church.
Nearly 100 hand-made quilts were displayed including some that were nearly 90 years old. There were some colorful quilts made from grain and flour sacks and one that was “rescued” from a thrift shop by Hanover Township resident Ann Shinko.
Society member Mary McGinnis said the idea for the show came when her daughter and son-in-law were cleaning out the Wilkes-Barre home of his late uncle, former GAR High School football coach and athletic director John Rowlands. In the home they found nearly a dozen quilts made by Rowlands’ late mother, Dorothy Rowlands. Those quilts were on display.
Also on display was a quilt made by McGinnis and Anne Wambold which will be raffled off by the historical society. Raffle tickets are available for society members and will be available throughout the summer and fall at the society’s table at the Rotary Farmer’s Market at Crestwood high School parking lot on Sunday mornings beginning in early July.
