With lights flashing and sirens blaring, Santa Claus arrived in the Wright Township Volunteer Fire Department command vehicle just in time to turn on the lights on the magnificent Christmas tree in Rice Township park Saturday night.

The Jolly Old Elf took his seat in front of a festively decorated gingerbread house and with the help of Rice Township Police Chief Harry Ehret, flipped the switch to light the tree.

Afterwards, Santa greeted a long line of children who waited patiently to tell him what they want for Christmas. Joining Santa for photos with children were the Grinch and one of Santa’s reindeer (a blowup outfit).

Prior to Santa’s arrival and the lighting of the tree, young and old were treated to hot chocolate, coffee, cookies, chocolate pops and s’mores kits. Youngsters also received Christmas stockings filled with goodies.

This was the second year for the event which is becoming more and more popular.

The gingerbread house was constructed by township supervisor Rick Arnold and painted by Crestwood High School students Natalie Hunsinger, Leila McGraw, Madison Mendrzycki and Michael Mullisky.
