PITTSTON — Josephine “Jo” Elick Slapinski, 96, of Wesley Village, Pittson, Pa. and formerly of Mountain Top, Pa. was called home by her Lord on Monday, Sep. 5, 2022.
Born in Ashley in 1925, she was the daughter of the late Stella and Michael Elick.
A valedictorian graduate of Ashley High School (Class of 1943), she married Jim (James H) Slapinski – the love of her life – in 1948. Jim served as pastor to a number of charges of the United Methodist Church – and Jo found her calling as the minister’s wife. Her profound faith and spiritual joy truly established the foundation for raising her family surrounded by love. Jo also held a variety of positions in social service agencies through out her career, retiring from the Wilkes Barre Area Agency for the Aging in 1990.
Jo’s true passion was supporting her “second family” at Christ United Methodist Church, Mountain Top, PA. Having returned to Mountain Top after retirement to Jim’s boyhood home, Jo participated in the church choir, out reach and quilting circle. Even through COVID, Jo continued to join services through “virtual church” each Sunday with the help of her daughter Jamie. Jo’s family is deeply grateful for the spiritual support provided by Christ United Methodist Church and Pastor JP Bohanan.
Prior to moving to Wesley Village in 2021, Jo lived at Wright Manor in Mountain Top, where she enjoyed neighbors and friends at the Active Adults Center.
The family is extremely grateful for the compassionate care provided by the care givers at Wesley Village during the time Jo spent there.
In addition to her parents, Jo was preceded in death by her husband Jim in 2011 and an infant granddaughter Keisha in 1975.
Jo is survived by her son Alan James and wife Linda, Saltsburg, Pa., daughter Holly Lou, Cockeysville, Md. and twin daughters Amy Jo Ulrich (Dick), Cherry Log, Ga. and Jamie Joy Collins, (Jim), Monterey, Va. She is also survived by 5 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, niece Patricia Wilson and nephew Dave Kramer.
Services will be scheduled through McCune Funeral Home, Mountain Top, Pa. with interment beside Jim in the Albert Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Christ United Methodist Church, Mountain Top, Pa.
