WRIGHT TWP. — Community members rallied around Crestwood sophomore Mayson Girton through multiple fundraisers in the area.
Girton was playing in a Crestwood JV football game against Berwick as a linebacker when he suffered an injury that was treated as a shifted patella. When the pain in his knee didn’t go away after six weeks, doctors ordered an MRI.
After the MRI showed an incidental finding of a mass tumor, Mayson was diagnosed with a rare form of pediatric cancer, myxoid liposarcoma. On Jan. 5, he went in for surgery at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia to remove the tumor.
To celebrate Girton’s birthday early, Pizza Bella in Mountain Top hosted “Mayson Girton Day” on Feb. 5.
Jackie Doherty, Pizza Bella’s owner, expected a big crowd the day of and even asked multiple employees to come in early to help out with the 400+ pies they anticipated making. Patrons were invited to eat in, take their food to go or get delivery and 100 percent of the proceeds above food cost went to Mayson and his family to help with medical costs.
On Feb. 9, the Crestwood Comet wrestlers and booster club hosted their own fundraiser in support of Mayson at their last home wrestling meet.
Supporters were encouraged to wear or purchase “Mayson Strong” t-shirts and to “flood the stands with black and yellow.”
Local businesses and community members, including Junie G’s breakfast and Grateful Roast Coffee, donated baskets and gift cards as basket raffle prizes.
All proceeds from the concession stand, 50/50 and basket raffle went to Mayson and his family. The booster club also accepted donations for the family.
