MOUNTAIN TOP — Tax season is now underway from Jan. 26 through April 15, and local tax professional Gary Genasevich of Mountain Top’s H&R Block offered insight into tax season this year and how the community can feel prepared for the few months ahead.
Genasevich noted several changes in 2026 were in cost-related deductions, including car loan interest deductions, overtime deductions, senior deductions, and tips deductions. These deductions may look different from 2025 to 2026 for taxpayers.
Genasevich clarified a common misconception about taxes: “an extension may seem like it would give you more time to pay, when it really doesn’t; it may give an extension to file, but not an extension to pay.”
The most common mistake taxpayers make when filing, according to Genasevich, is failing to claim the tax benefits they are entitled to, such as those for education, dependents, and more.
First-time filers may feel very overwhelmed when they file their taxes for the first time. However, Genasevich reassures taxpayers that there’s plenty of help to take the right steps, file on time, and do the research. If you need help, consult a tax professional.
When thinking about clients during tax season, Genasevich notes that the most rewarding thing about helping the community during tax season is helping them get the best tax return, and assisting clients through every stage of their lives, from graduations to marriage to children, and being there for them year after year.
