WILKES-BARRE — Schiel’s Family Market, a family-owned grocery store chain, operates two stores in Wilkes-Barre — on George Avenue and Hanover Street — and one on Wheeler Avenue in Dunmore.
Since the first store opened in 2000, Schiel’s stores offer a range of products and are noted for staff politeness and multiple registers.
Schiel’s has been honored with the Times Leader’s “2025 Best Places to Work” award.
The three owners of Schiel’s are Gary Schiel, Frank Schiel, Sr., and Carleen Eustice, along with Frank Schiel Jr., and Christopher Schiel.
Gary Schiel said chances are whenever you walk into a Schiel’s store, at least one family member will be there.
“We are very family oriented — we’re always in our stores,” Gary Schiel said. “We consider ourselves a friendly neighborhood store that offers quality products a fair prices. And we pride ourselves on the cleanliness of our stores.”
Gary Schiel said the three stores employ between 250-275 part-time and full time people. He said each store features quality meats, a top-notch deli and awesome bakery items. He said the stores offer daily prepared meals and fresh-made sandwiches.
The first store opened on Hanover Street in South Wilkes-Barre in 2000. The second store opened on George Avenue in the Parsons section of the city in 2005. Recently, a third store opened Dunmore in late 2024, carrying on the tradition of local, family-run markets.
Schiel’s celebrated 25 years in business in 2025, highlighting their legacy.
