It was about 10 years ago when Corey Poncavage decided he wanted to install a solar power system on the roof of his Mountain Top home. Trouble was, he couldn’t find a company that would do the project for a reasonable price.

So Poncavage, an electrical engineer, decided to see if he could do it himself. He did his own research and he learned what it takes to make a practical, reliable, and cost effective solar system.

He designed and installed a solar system at his own home and soon afterwards received requests from family and friends who also wanted a solar system. He enjoyed the process of designing and installing a solar system so much that he decided after nearly 25 years as a senior systems analyst at Talen Energy’s Susquehanna Steam Electric Station in Salem Twp., it was time to transition to a new career.

“I decided it was time for something new,” he related.

Poncavage said he enjoyed the process and result so much that he kept going, installing solar systems for others who shared the same goals of reasonable cost and payback period without sacrificing quality. He eventually formed his own solar energy business, Power from Space. “It was the natural next step,” he offered.

The company, which serves eastern Pennsylvania, provides everything from site evaluation to design, permitting and installation of solar systems.

“There are lots of benefits to the technology,” he said of solar power. “It’s clean, there are no moving parts, and it’s good for large or small buildings,” he explained.

“The sun’s energy is free,” he noted. “Why not take advantage of it by using free space on your roof or in your yard.”

Poncavage pointed out that solar energy is not just good for the planet, it also provides a solid return on investment and protects against future electricity price inflation. “From a financial aspect, solar systems make a lot of sense,” he offered.

Typically, he explained, a property owner would recoup a full return on their investment in about seven years through cost savings and tax credits. Qualified systems, he said, can receive a federal tax credit of 30 percent of the initial cost.

Properties with solar systems, Poncavage explained, connect with electric companies’ power grids so that extra power the system produces during bright sunny days is sent into the “grid,” providing credits to the homeowner. “That extra power you are producing on a sunny day goes out into the grid. It might be used by your neighbors without them even knowing it.”

For anyone interested in installing solar energy for their home or business, Power from Space will provide a free evaluation. If the site is suitable for solar a project, the firm will provide a proposal which includes a project design, obtaining necessary permits, installation and interconnecting with the electric supplier.

Power from Solar, Poncavage noted, uses Enphase microinverters which are the safest, most reliable, and most capable solar technology in use in the world today. He also pointed out the company is certified by the Better Business Bureau, assuring customers are working with a reliable firm.
