Music Together, a music and movement approach to early childhood music development for infants, toddlers, preschoolers and kindergarten children, as well as their parents, has arrived in Mountain Top.

Kerry Kenny, director of Music Together of Bloomsburg, if now offering the research-based early childhood music curriculum at St. Martin-in-the Field Church, Church Road in Rice Twp. Kenny presents the program from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. on Monday mornings at the church where eight children and their parents or primary caregivers currently participate in the eight-week session.

Certified in the Music Together curriculum, Kenny also presents Music Together in Bloomsburg, Lewisburg, Berwick, Danville and Elysburg to about 90 children and their parents.

The Archbald native explained that Music Together develops every child’s “birthright to basic music competence” by encouraging the actual experiencing of music rather than the learning of concepts or information about music.

“Music Together of Bloomsburg builds your child’s natural enthusiasm for music and movement,” Kenny explained prior to a recent class at the Rice Twp. church. “We’ll help you provide your young child with the basic musical skills needed to become lifelong music makers,” she added.

Music Together offers classes for children from birth through kindergarten, in which parents and caregivers actively participate. During a recent 45-minute class, children ranging in age from 9 to 43 months, along with their parents (and grandparents) shared in songs, rhymes, movement and instrument play under the leadership of Kenny.

The current eight-week fall session began Sept. 9 and continues through Oct. 28. Kenny said children and their parents may join at any time.

Kenny pointed out that she has been making music all of her life. As a child, she grew up performing in her grandparent’s Irish Pub in Archbald. Eventually, her Aunt – a professional pianist – teamed young her up with her siblings and cousin to form a traditional Irish music troupe. In high school and college, Kerry led bands, performed roles in community theatre, spent a year overseas in Ireland studying Irish Music, and eventually went on to pursue a graduate degree in music at NYU. Her second year of graduate school was spent at the Academy of Music in Krakow, Poland, where she studied Computer Music Composition.
