For the second year, the Saint Jude Third Grade took a page out of the book of America’s greatest scientists to create another exciting Invention Convention.
From start to finish the students take part in an intense process first brainstorming all of the unpleasant jobs at school and home. Then the research process begins as students learn the names of the six simple machines, try out tools such as screwdrivers and analyze various hammers to create one that can be used in given situations.
Students research accomplished inventors and read about their inventions, then work their way through the development process, creating a work structure plan and following a timeline. They submit progress reports and when finished create a brochure. The brochure helps the inventors “sell” at the Invention Convention.
Third grade teachers, Mrs. Grenzberg and Mrs. Rinehimer supervise the brochures, but it is the team of parents and students that really are the source of the convention’s success. Parents and students alike enjoy visiting the convention and it is definitely one of third grade’s most challenging undertakings.
