Dr. Juan Torres, a Doctor of Acupuncture, and an energy worker/healer in the alternative medicine field, has joined Dr. Stacie Breslin at Mountaintop Chiropractic.
A graduate of the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine, Dr. Torres has a master’s degree in acupuncture and recently earned his degree/certification in Chinese Herbal Medicine from Daoist Traditions College of Chinese Medical Arts.
The 44-year-old Dr. Torres, who resides in Hazleton, brings to Mountain Top and surrounding communities a practitioner of holistic healing. In addition to his doctor’s degree in acupuncture, he also has certification as a Reiki Master and in crystal healing.
A graduate of the prestigious Baruch College in New York City where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Corporate Communication and a minor in psychology, he began his professional career with Deutsch Bank in New York City. It was an injury he suffered in a fall while working for the bank that eventually led him to the study of acupuncture and Oriental Medicine.
“I was hurrying to an appointment,” he explained in a recent interview in his treatment space at Mountaintop Chiropractic. “I slipped on a marble floor in the entrance of a building.” In an effort to protect his head in the fall, he injured his back. That fall changed his life.
Dr. Torres sought help from a chiropractor who referred him to a colleague who had two acupuncturists on staff. “They fixed my back pain in a couple visits, but I continued to go to them for health and wellness. It (acupuncture) really intrigued me,” he explained.
In 2013, he enrolled in Pacific College of Oriental Medicine, earning his master’s degree of acupuncture in April of 2018 and in 2019 completed his doctorate in Chinese Medicine.
Dr. Torres explained that when he provides treatment he focuses on the patient’s individual needs and what needs to be done or addressed to achieve optimal health and well-being.
“We believe that each person has the opportunity to fully heal if given the best parameters by which to do so,” he said. “When I stick a needle in someone, there is this ‘bio-energy field’ and its being interrupted by this needle. The brain is telling the body either you’re doing something incorrectly in the body or not doing something that needs to be done.”
While most people equate acupuncture with pain relief, Dr. Torres emphasized the art goes much further.
“That’s where the misinterpretation comes,’ he said. “Most people think acupuncture with pain, and we do a lot more than that. We treat every medical condition out there without doing surgery.”
“Everything is energy and that’s how this system of medicine works,” he said of Oriental Medicine. “It uses the energy bio field to help the person heal. I don’t cause your body to heal. Your body knows what it needs to do to heal, I just remind it what it needs to do using acupuncture, sound, Reiki, or crystals.”
Dr. Torres emphasized that acupuncture and other forms of Oriental Medicine are scientifically proven treatments.
“Medical science has proven we each have energy bio field,” he said. “When we do this energy work with people who are not so great a health condition, we help people raise their energy vibration.”
Both Reiki and acupuncture, he noted, have been proven to help cancer patients. Whether they receive chemotherapy or radiation, he explained, cancer patients who also receive Reiki notice their white blood cells immediately increase after receiving Reiki. “It’s actual science,” he stated. Acupuncture also can help cancer patients, he noted. “Chemotherapy is so powerful, but so dangerous,” he said. “Acupuncture can help a person get stronger while doing that.”
While acupuncture often is used to help relieve pain or fight a condition a person may have, it often is used by people who want to maintain their health. Sometimes, he noted, people turn to acupuncture just for peace. “A lot of people suffer from depression and anxiety.,” Dr. Torres noted. “Usually, our go to is to pop a pill because that’s what we know. A lot of people don’t know about acupuncture and herbs.”
“I don’t want someone to come in here and just get acupuncture,” he offered. “I want this to be deeper so they can have lasting results. My goal is to get patients to remember what homeostasis is and get the body back to that. That’s my job. My job is to hold space for you to heal and do what I have to do with the tools I have to create that space for you and in a loving environment. You should come here and feel that I care about you and that your health is as important to me as it is for you.”
