Crestwood scored in all three phases in a 35-point first quarter Friday night as the Comets rolled to a 69-7 victory over Hanover Area in a Wyoming Valley Conference non-divisional game.
The Comets (7-1) led 62-0 at halftime. The third and fourth quarters were shortened to eight minutes each with a running clock. Hanover Area fell to 1-7.
Crestwood scored on its second and fourth plays from scrimmage. Noah Schultz scored on a 44-yard run to give the Comets a 6-0 lead 25 seconds into the game. He then scored on a 2-yard run to complete a two-play, 23-yard drive after a Hanover Area punt traveled minus-2 yards after a bad bounce.
Schultz, a 1,000-yard rusher, carried the ball just three times in the game for 95 yards.
The Comets made it 21-0 at 8:24 of the first quarter as Nick Miscavage returned a blocked punt 3 yards to the end zone. Then six plays after an interception by Miscavage, Robert Knight ran in from 22 yards out.
Crestwood completed its 35-point first quarter with a 25-yard interception return for a touchdown by Josh Hilpp.
The next three touchdowns came after Hanover Area failed to convert fourth-down plays on its own side of the field. Quarterback Jaden Shedlock scored on an 11-yard run, Miscavage scored on a 29-yard run and Colin Lazo ran in from 11 yards away.
Hanover Area’s only touchdown came with 7:09 remaining in the abbreviated third quarter when Sean Dooner hauled in an 83-yard pass from Christian Torres.
A tough test awaits Crestwood next week with a road trip to Berwick. The Bulldogs ended Dallas’ undefeated run last week at Crispin Field. The Comets close with North Pocono before the playoffs begin.
The Hawkeyes lost their seventh straight after a season-opening win. They close out with road games at Lake-Lehman and Nanticoke Area. The Nanticoke Area game will be played on Thursday, Oct. 27.
