Each edition of Mountain Peaks area resident Joe Sainclair will share a photo or two with the paper’s readers.
This week, Sainclair shares a little history along with the photos.
A long time ago, Route 309 took a different path connecting Mountain Top with Wilkes-Barre than it does today.
It used to go over top of the island that currently sits between the northbound and southbound lanes of 309 in the “rock cut” section of the mountain. The top photo shows the view from atop the island watching traffic come northbound on 309. The photo at bottom left shows the remains of a Blue Ribbon Grocery truck that still are sitting atop the island. The photo at bottom right is from atop the island showing both northbound and southbound traffic of route 309 coming into and out of Mountain Top.
Sainclair, a Crestwood graduate, teaches English at the school and has been an avid explorer of nature and abandoned ruins since high school.
He’s married and has two children in the Crestwood School District.
You can find him on Facebook and YouTube at JTS Explorations.
