A post-World War II vintage caboose arrived at most likely will be its final home recently thanks to the efforts of the Mountain Top Historical Society.

The caboose, owned by the Reading & Northern Railroad, was donated to the society to be placed on its grounds along Route 309 near the intersection of Route 437. The caboose, at one time owned by the New Haven Railroad, made its way on rails from Towanda to the Reading & Northern Penobscot Yard in Mountain Top. At the Penobscot Yard, a crew from Lane’s Cranes lifted the body of the rail car onto an Ayer’s Towing flatbed which carried it to the historical society property. The caboose’s wheels were transported the same way.

The wheels were placed on a short strip of tracks awaiting their arrival at the site. The caboose, under the watchful eye of historical society member Eric Aigeldinger and other members of the group, was lifted by crane onto the wheels and secured into place.

Historical society officials said the next step is to remove the existing paint and re-paint the caboose. They said logos of all the railroad companies that served Mountain Top will be placed on the car. “We’re doing this to recognize the importance of railroads in the history of Mountain Top and to honor those men and women who worked for the railroads,” said Aigeldinger.
