MOUNTAIN TOP — A large wildfire that burned well into the night of April 29 and brought fire companies from all over the Wyoming Valley into the fight was brought under control early April 30.
It was still unclear if any homes or properties were damaged during the wildfire, which started around 7 p.m. Friday night. Its cause remained under investigation on Saturday. The total amount of damaged acreage is still being assessed.
The White Haven Borough Facebook page, citing fire chief Pete Kohl of Mountaintop Hose Company No. 1 from Fairview Township, said Saturday that the fire had been reduced to a few hot spots. Our news partners at FOX 56 reported that the fire was contained by about 1 p.m. April 30.
Crews fought the brush fire into the night, and some crews were called to the scene early April 30 to assist the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, according to the Luzerne County Fire Companies Facebook page.
FOX 56 added that officials said the fire started somewhere between Glen Summit and Johnson Street and worked its way toward Mountain Top.
Dramatic images captured by area resident John Evans, such as the one attached here, illustrated the sheer size of April 29’s wildfire and were widely shared on social media.
The risk of fires across the region remains an issue, the National Weather Service warned, urging people to heed any local and state burning regulations.
