The Mountain Top Area Community Association, in cooperation with Clean Slate Addiction Treatment Centers, will present “Drug Addiction in Luzerne County: New Questions, New Answers” from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, May 26, at Crestwood High School.
The free seminar is open to the public and will be held in the middle school cafeteria.
The event will be led by Dr. Mark Bohn, Board Certified Addiction Specialist. Presenters will include physicians, law enforcement officials, counselors and rehabilitation professionals who deal with drug abuse issues on a daily basis.
“Every year more than 100,000 individuals are dying from this scourge,” Dr. Bohn related. “That is one death every four minutes, and the problem is only getting worse.”
Dr. Bohn pointed out that according to experts, drug abuse also is a major underlying factor in divorce, bankruptcy, child abuse, suicides and crime.
The workshop is aimed at creating a higher level of awareness of the problem which affects every neighborhood and individual. The information to be shared primarily is targeted at parents and family members of young people, who are at high risk due to peer pressure and societal factors. However, the event is open to all ages.
Topics to be covered include:
• When does drug use become addiction?
• What are the dangers of street drugs?
• Why is the risk of fatal overdose so high?
• What to do when you learn a family member is using drugs.
• Does rehabilitation work? Does medication work?
