MOUTAIN TOP — Jessica Danko, leader of the largest Equine 4-H Club in Luzerne County and in the state of Pennsylvania, was recognized as the state-wide PA 4-H Horse Club Volunteer of the Month.

This recognition was celebrated March 13 to March 19 and is noteworthy in 4-H.

“When I heard I was recognized it was exciting,” said Danko. “I strive to make each meeting the best experience for the kids.”

In order to become the PA 4-H Horse Club Volunteer of the Month, someone has to be nominated by another person. Then, one person from each state is chosen by those in 4-H.

4-H is a nation-wide network of youth organizations and has similar aspects to the Boy and Girl Scouts of America. However, 4-H is specific to learning about horses and teaching life skills to children with horses.

Also, what sets 4-H apart from Boy and Girl Scouts of America is the children in 4-H essentially run the meetings and make the choices for their groups. For instance, the Equine Enthusiast 4-H Group have upcoming fundraisers in April and May, which the children will be active participants of these fundraisers and will decide amongst themselves how they want to spend the funds.

Danko’s group, Equine Enthusiast 4-H Group, began in the midst of COVID-19. Originally, the club began virtually but once students started going back to in-person classes, the club was not active.

“I’ve realized there are so many kids out there that don’t have horses and they have an interest and want to learn more,” said Danko. “Therefore, I was encouraged to take over this Equine Enthusiast Group.”

Danko, a Nuangola resident, and the volunteers that assist have specific topics for each of their meetings, which are held every three weeks. A meeting topic can range from the anatomy of a horse to how to take care of a horse.

Currently, there are 32 active members in Danko’s club and about 90 registered members in Luzerne County.

Aside from Danko being recognized as the PA 4-H Horse Club Volunteer of the Month, she also was offered and accepted a part-time position as the assistant to the 4-H extension educator at Penn State Extension in Luzerne County. Her responsibilies will include planning and coordinating events that will occur from May through September within the Luzerne County 4-H extension.

Upon hearing she was accepted for this position, Danko was estatic to start working. She will begin in May but does not plan to stop volunteering her time as the leader of the Equine Enthusiast 4-H Group.
